Zealous for Good Works

This past Sunday, Pastor Matt encouraged us that prayer is not simply something we strive to do as a good work, but it is the very outflow of our identity as people made in God’s image. We don’t do prayer to become intercessors, we are intercessors so we pray. 

This diagram helps illustrate his point:

 

I want to expand upon Pastor Matt’s point by including one more element to the diagram. 

This idea, which we will focus on this Sunday, is found in Titus 2:11-14 (LSB):

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good works.

Christ is the grace of God that has appeared and gave Himself (His Work). Through that work, He has identified us as redeemed and purified (Identity). Now, from those identities we should become zealous for good works! 

Jesus, thank You for giving Yourself for us. Help us remember what You have redeemed us from and how You have purified us. Lord, make us zealous for good works that flow from the identity that You gave us. We love You! Amen.
