The Deceitfulness of Busyness

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”           Luke 10:41–42 (ESV)

We live in a world increasingly consumed by busyness and anxiety. A hundred years ago, life was so much simpler. Today, things we consider necessities—smartphones, computers, cars, and the internet—promise to make life easier, yet often leave us more distracted, overwhelmed, and exhausted. These things can serve us well, but when we are no longer in control of them, we become a slave to them.

One of Satan’s greatest deceptions is keeping us so busy with the things of this world that we neglect the very reason we were created—intimacy with God. We were created to dwell in His presence, to be His dwelling place through the Holy Spirit. And one day, we will dwell with Him forever (Revelation 21:3).

Throughout God’s Word, He repeatedly warns us against anxiety and the cares of this world:

Psalm 55:22 “Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you…”

1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

Philippians 4:6: “Be anxious for nothing…”

Matthew 6:25: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…”

Yet how easily we allow the pace and pressures of life to rob us of His peace! Living in constant worry and anxiety is like holding our breath and expecting to be okay. We were created to breathe in His presence…His Spirit!  If we don’t, it will not go well for us.  So today – breathe Him in.  Let Jesus be the daily leader of every step of our lives, every decision we make, every thought we have…let it all be in Him and through Him that we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28)

And please understand, I am NOT writing this as someone who has mastered this, but as someone who recognizes how easily I fall into the same trap.

In Luke 10, Jesus tells Martha that only one thing is necessary. Mary had chosen that one thing—sitting at His feet, listening to His voice, and simply being with Him.

This week, I want to encourage all of us to slow down, sit at the feet of Jesus, and breathe in His presence. Set aside the distractions, quiet your heart, and wait upon Him. Don’t allow the busyness of life to steal what matters most.

In Matthew 11:28-29 Jesus invites us to…“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy burdened (anxious), and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Our greatest need is not to accomplish more in a state of busyness, but to abide in Christ.  Otherwise, we will get stuck in the BUSYness of life… B – Being, U – Under, S – Satan’s, Y – Yoke.  😊

Let’s pray!

Lord Jesus, forgive us for allowing the busyness of this world to draw us away from Your presence. We repent for embracing the patterns of this world rather than remaining at Your feet. You remind us that apart from You, we can do nothing (John 15:5).  Jesus, our Good Shepherd, lead us in Your ways. Teach us to walk in step with Your Spirit, neither turning to the right nor to the left. Free us from the grip of busyness, anxiety, and exhaustion. May Your peace guard our hearts and minds, and may we find our rest, our joy, and our life in You alone.  Amen.

May the peace of Christ lead you this week…and every week.

Love you all!
