Faithful Stewards & Temporary Residents
Rock Family,
There may come a day when following Jesus will cost us our lives. But the choice of whom we will serve is already before us TODAY. Will we bow to the god of this world, or will we bow only to Jesus?
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24 (NIV)
The decisions we make today are shaping the people we will be tomorrow. We cannot assume that a life of compromise will suddenly become a life of radical obedience when the stakes are higher. Every day, in decisions both big and small, we have an opportunity to say YES to Jesus by trusting Him, obeying His Word, and surrendering what we have to His purposes.
Paul urges us in Ephesians 4:1 to live a life worthy of the calling we have received. He wrote those words as a prisoner! His obedience had already cost him his freedom, and he continued to follow Jesus knowing it could cost him his life. His hope was anchored in the age to come.
That is why he could write that he did not lose heart. He understood that the troubles of this life could not compare with the eternal glory ahead. He fixed his eyes on what was unseen and eternal (2 Corinthians 4:16–18).
Jim Elliot was a man that lived out these scriptures above. He was a missionary who gave his life seeking to bring the gospel to the Waorani people of Ecuador. In 1956, he and four fellow missionaries were killed by men from the very people they had come to reach with the love of Jesus. Years before his death, he wrote these words, expressing the eternal perspective that shaped his life: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”
Do our daily decisions reflect that same eternal perspective?
This reaches into how we handle our money, our time, our possessions, and our comfort. Everything we have belongs to the Lord…we were bought with a price! We are now stewards entrusted with His resources, and we have the privilege of using them for His Kingdom.
When we give, serve, and make room for the needs of others, we put our faith in Jesus into practice. We loosen our grip on things that cannot last and invest in what has eternal value.
What could we simplify in our lives so we have more to give for the age to come?
What comfort could we surrender so someone else can experience the love of Jesus?
This Sunday, we will continue looking at what it means to live as faithful stewards and temporary residents in this present age, with our hope firmly set on the age to come. Come ready to let the Lord speak into the practical daily decisions of your life.
My prayer is that we would be a people who love Jesus wholeheartedly, hold our possessions with open hands, and remain faithful whatever the cost. He is worthy of everything we have and everything we are!
I love you and look forward to worshiping with you Sunday!
