When a Gift Becomes a God
Rock Family,
God gives us many good gifts—resources, abilities, relationships, and opportunities. We should receive them with gratitude and use them faithfully. But even a good gift can become something we lean on for the security we are meant to find in God.
Psalm 52:7–8 (CSB) puts two people side by side:
“Here is the man who would not make God his refuge,
but trusted in the abundance of his riches,
taking refuge in his destructive behavior.
But I am like a flourishing olive tree in the house of God;
I trust in God’s faithful love forever and ever.”
Both people trust; the difference is what they trust. One finds his security in what he possesses. The other rests his confidence in God’s faithful love.
Martin Luther addressed this well by saying, “That now, I say, upon which you set your heart and put your trust is properly your god.” Where we place our trust shows who we truly worship and who we have made our God.
This Sunday I will invite us to examine our own hearts. When pressure comes, where do we turn for reassurance? When things go well, who or what gets the credit? God’s gifts are meant to draw us toward Him. As we prepare to gather, let’s ask Him to show us where our confidence has shifted from His faithful love to something He has placed in our hands.
Father, thank you for your good gifts and your unfailing love. Give us your empowering grace to receive your gifts with gratitude, use them faithfully, and keep our trust in You alone. When abundance makes us self-reliant or uncertainty makes us afraid, turn our hearts toward You again. Be our refuge, and teach us to rest in your faithful love forever and ever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Use the gift. Trust the Giver.
Pastor Andrew
