Too Busy To Be Martha

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:38-42 ESV

Normally, we would think, “I’m too busy to spend time with God,” because in the natural it would seem that every minute spent praying or worshiping would be one less minute we have to work on what needs to be done. But the Kingdom of God isn’t natural at all.

On Sunday, the Holy Spirit directed us through a beautiful service where we were able to worship the Lord, and reflect on this passage from Luke 10. As I continue to meditate on “the one thing” that Jesus says is necessary, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not what I typically think is most important.

I tend to be task oriented and goal focused. I like to-do lists. But being intimate with Jesus isn’t a task or a goal, it’s not something you mark off a list. It’s a lifestyle.

On my busy days, it’s tempting to say, “I’ve got so much to do, there’s no time to worship and pray,” but that’s the opposite of what Jesus teaches us through the life of Mary & Martha.  On one of Martha’s busiest days (hosting the Lord for dinner) Jesus says the better thing is to sit at His feet and hear His voice.

I hope that you’re as encouraged as I am to switch the mindset from, “I’m too busy to be Mary,” to “I’m too busy not to be Mary”. I pray you’re able to find more accomplishment with Jesus than apart from Him.

Father God, I pray that you would help us to push back against anxiety and the stress of deadlines and due dates. I pray that on our busiest days we would continue to make you our highest priority and our greatest delight. Holy Spirit, help us to walk in step with you always, so that we can accomplish even more with you then we could without you.

I hope you have a wonderful week. Be blessed.
