Sabbath: The Law, The Grace, The Gift

“The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.”
– Mark 2:27 CSB

Last Sunday, we looked at Jesus’ invitation to come to Him and receive rest. This week, I want to continue that thought by exploring something deeply practical: Sabbath. What does it actually look like to stop, trust God, and make room to receive the rest He offers?

For many of us, the word “Sabbath” brings up questions. Is that an Old Testament thing? Does it still apply to us? What are we supposed to do—or stop doing? Those are good questions, and this Sunday we’ll open the Scriptures together to look at “Sabbath: The Law, The Grace, The Gift.”

There’s something beautiful about the fact that God rested and blessed the seventh day of creation (Gen 2:1-3) before the Ten Commandments were ever given. Later, Jesus reminds us that Sabbath was made for us (Mark 2:27). There is a gift here that I believe many of us have a hard time receiving, especially when our calendars are full and there is always one more thing to get done.

Father God, thank you for your promise and your gift of rest. Lord, we want to receive it by following your ways. Holy Spirit, would you teach us what Sabbath rest looks like for us in the context of  our lives, responsibilities, and culture? We recognize our great need for you and ask you to give us grace  as we humble ourselves and walk by faith.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
