The Ultimate Souvenir Gift

Have you, or someone you love, ever gone on a trip and returned with a souvenir gift? I remember as a kid my parents went on a mission trip, and my sister and I were counting down the days until they returned because we loved them and missed them. When they returned they brought back a souvenir gift for my sister and I.

This memory came back to me as I was reading the parable recorded in Luke 19 where Jesus teaches his disciples that he (the nobleman) must go away for a while.

Therefore he [Jesus] said, A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then to return.’”
Luke 19:12 CSB

When Jesus comes back from his time away, and “The kingdoms of the world become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ…” (Revelation 11:15), he is going to come bearing gifts  from his time away. Those gifts Include eternal life (Jn 6:40); authority to rule (2 Tim 2:12); making us kings and priests (Rev 5:10); the crown of righteousness (2 Tim 4:8); the ability to dwell physically with God (Rev 21:3); no more tears, death, mourning or pain (Rev 21:4); to eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God, hidden manna, a white stone with a secret nickname, authority over the nations, the morningstar, white clothes, our name written in the Book Of Life, the privilege to sit on Jesus’ throne with Him (Rev 2-3); and a myriad of other incredible things (Bible). Talk about the ultimate “souvenir gifts”!

Father God, in this Advent season, would you give us a fresh measure of hope, and excited anticipation regarding Christ’s imminent return. Would you, by Your mercy and grace, help us to be conformed into the image of Jesus, so that when He appears, we will not be disqualified from Your presence and these incredible “souvenir gifts”. Fill us with Your Spirit and equip us with boldness to tell others about the incredible love that was made manifest in Christ. Amen!

I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday,
Pastor Andrew and your Rock Staff.
