The Love That Leads Us to the Day of Christ

Dear Rock Family,

This week I want to invite us to set our hearts again on the coming of Jesus. Paul prayed that the Philippians’ love would abound more and more, with knowledge and discernment, so that they would be pure and blameless for the day of Christ (Philippians 1:9–10). I love that picture of discipleship. We are not simply trying to make it through another week. Jesus is preparing us for the day when He comes, raises the dead, makes all things right, and establishes His kingdom.

And while we wait for that day, Paul points us to the way Jesus lived in this age. Though He was in the form of God, He humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:5–8). This is the love of Jesus. He humbled and gave Himself fully for us. His love for us carried Him all the way to the cross. So as we look to His coming, we also want to live with deep thankfulness for His love and let that same love be seen in the way we treat one another. 

This Sunday, we will spend more time in the book of Philippians as we continue looking at these matters together. We want to live in light of His coming, hold fast to the love revealed in the cross, and learn to show His love in the middle of this present age. My prayer is that, by His grace, we would shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the Word of life, until the day of Christ (Philippians 2:14–16).
