The Lamb of God
As we approach one of the most reverent and divine days of the year, resurrection Sunday (Easter), I would like us to take some time to meditate on one of the beautiful names of Jesus…The Lamb of God. This name was first spoken of in the Bible by John the Baptist in John 1:29 when he saw Jesus and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” This was a declaration that not only shook the earth, but the heavens. John knew everything was about to change for eternity and he was declaring it! For without Jesus becoming the Lamb of God, every person is forever condemned and separated from our Heavenly Father. Our salvation, our redemption, our eternal life with God, is only available because Jesus became the Lamb of God!
“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God, does not have life.” 1 Jn 5:11
We see God’s plan for Jesus to become the Lamb of God back in Genesis 22 when God tested Abraham after giving him a son. God was looking for someone who had a heart after His to be the “father of many nations”. So after miraculously giving Abraham a son, God asked him to go up the mountain and sacrifice his son. Abraham obeyed God, but also believed that God would provide the lamb for the sacrifice in place of his son.
“Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?…The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Genesis 22:7-8
Abraham was not only believing for a lamb in place of his son, he was prophetically declaring the sacrificial Lamb that God would give for the sins of the world. It is amazing that 2,000 years later on the very same mountain that God provided the lamb for Abraham in place of his only son, God provided the ‘once for all’ sacrifice, His only Son, the Lamb of God, for all the sins of the world so we could receive eternal life!
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Jn 3:16
“…If anyone does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – JESUS Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins…” 1 Jn 2:1-2
I am in awe that my Heavenly Father – the Almighty God who created the universe – would give His son to be sacrificed on a cross for my sins so that I have the opportunity to dwell with God through the Holy Spirit living within me! And I am in awe of Jesus, the Lamb of God, that He would come to this earth as a man and have the nature of a servant, giving his life through death on a cross, so that His life could be in me in spite of my sinful nature. And I am also in awe (in a not-so-good way) that there are people who don’t know this truth and those who still reject such a loving God and sacrificial Son.
Lord, In this time of Passover leading up to celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from death, may the Lamb of God receive the reward of His sufferings. May we be those who boldly make known the mystery of the gospel of Jesus as we open our mouths and share with others as Christ’s ambassadors and ministers of reconciliation! May we be in awe of our Savior and Lord as the one and only Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world so that we could be one with Him!
I love you and am excited to be with you all on Resurrection Sunday!
