The Eyes of Our Heart
But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.
Psalm 141:8 NIV
Obviously, we know that God is invisible; though his workings can be seen plainly. So when we talk about fixing our eyes on God we’re talking about two things.
1. The Person of Jesus
Colossians 1:15 teaches us that, “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.” When we want to see God, we can look at Jesus. Although He’s not present on the Earth in a physical form right now, we have the Gospel accounts that do a remarkable job of teaching us what Jesus is like.
2. The Eyes of Our Heart
Beyond physically seeing, we have the Eyes of our Heart, or others refer to it as our Mind’s Eye. I believe that’s what the author of Hebrews is referring to when he says, “We do this [running the race God has set before us] by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” (Heb 12:2)
Last Sunday’s worship service felt extra special because we made it a priority to fix our eyes, mind, and thoughts on Jesus. I want to encourage you, you don’t have to wait until Sunday to do that again. Today, tomorrow, and everyday; refocus your attention on Jesus. Let your eyes be fixed on Him.
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Isaiah 26:3 NLT
Father God, help us to focus our thoughts, and our eyes on Jesus. Give us extra grace to retrain our focus on You, especially when we find ourselves distracted by worries, cares, or worldly things. Father, empower us by your Holy Spirit to fix our eyes on your son Jesus.
Hope you all have a great week,
Pastor Andrew Nemeth
