Teach Us to Pray
Dear Rock Family,
For the past few weeks, I have found myself drawn to Luke 11:1–13, and I want to invite you to look again with me at Jesus’ teaching on prayer. I believe The Rock Church has been given a specific calling from the Lord to steward prayer in our region. And as we approach our one year anniversary of the dedication of our Lighthouse Prayer Room and the beginning of our fifth summer of Maranatha prayer (7:30-9am in Lighthouse Prayer Room starting Monday), I sense that Jesus desires to put a fresh wind in our sails and renew our hearts again for prayer.
When the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Lord, teach us to pray,” they were not simply asking for a better devotional routine. They had watched Jesus pray, and they wanted to learn how to have the same access to the Father as His disciples, and I am eternally grateful that Jesus answered their request!
He taught them to pray: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.”
Prayer begins with God’s name and God’s kingdom. When we pray this, we are asking the Father to make Himself known, to fulfill every promise He has made, and to eventually bring the fullness of His reign through Jesus.
We are also taught to pray for daily bread, forgiveness, and deliverance from temptation. For the original hearers, this would have likely echoed Israel’s journey through the wilderness of Sinai, where God sustained His people day by day. In the same way, we are reminded of our constant need for the Father’s provision, mercy, grace, and strength to remain faithful in this age.
Then, at the end of these verses, Jesus gives this promise: the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.
The Holy Spirit is the gift we need as we await the coming kingdom. He strengthens us when we are weak, empowers us to bear witness to Jesus, and forms holiness within us. But He also helps us pray! When we do not know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us and teaches our hearts to cry, “Abba! Father!” (Rom. 8:15-16, 26-27). The Father gives us the Spirit not only in answer to prayer, but also as the One who sustains us in prayer until the day Jesus returns (Eph. 6:18; Jude 20-21).
Come ready to ask, seek, and knock.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Marcus and your Rock Staff
