Reflections on Humility

The Lord has been speaking to me recently of the importance of humility. That this is not just something He values, but it is who He is. This is how Jesus described himself in Matthew 11. He said,

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly (humble) in heart… Matt. 11:29

He called us to learn humility from Him. Jesus didn’t just embrace humility to accomplish something in His earthly ministry, but it is something of His eternal nature. He has eternally existed in the form of God as a servant. As we understand Jesus’ s humility, it produces admiration, gratitude, confidence and inspiration in us to be humble.

The concept of a humble God is unique to the Christian faith. No other world religion emphasizes a God of humility.  But the God of the Bible isn’t just powerful, He is the most humble.

Daniel 7 prophesied that the Son of Man would receive the leadership over all the nations (Dan. 7:13-14), but I think Jesus shocked the disciples when He connected His title as Son of Man with His commitment to serve humanity with humility.

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serveMatt. 20:28

When we see that this is who Jesus is, then we begin to understand why He rewards humility with such extravagance. He says to the humble,

Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth. Matt. 5:5 (CSB)

The Father has given the nations to His Son, and He is coming to take what is rightfully His at the second coming, and He will give authority and places of honor to those who have lived lives marked by humility and servant leadership.

Lord willing, we will get into more of the details this weekend concerning what walking in humility actually looks like, but for now, I want to encourage us to begin to ask the Holy Spirit to form Christ-like humility within us, and that He would expose any unperceived areas of pride that we need to Him to remove from our hearts.

Love you all,
Pastor Marcus and The Rock staff
