Praying in the Garden
Hello Rock Family,
Along with themes of Humility and Discipleship, this year we wanted to encourage everyone to “stay awake” in regards to prayer.
Matthew 26:40 CSB
Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, “So, couldn’t you stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
In Luke and John there’s a reference that Jesus and the disciples would go to this place to pray frequently. Sometimes the frequent things become the familiar things, and the familiar things become the unimportant things. It’s often said, “familiarity breeds contempt”.
Perhaps “contempt” is too strong a word for most people; especially in regards to prayer. But I suspect the temptation to feel casual towards a familiar prayer meeting still exists, even two thousands years later.
Whether it’s the monthly fasting, the weekly corporate prayer meeting, or your own personal time with the Lord; the temptation to skip, snooze, or disengage is very real. The disciples fell asleep in their garden prayer meeting, but had they known Jesus would go to the cross within a day, they likely would have found a way to stay awake and pray.
We don’t know what’s around the corner, but we should understand that in every season (now more than ever) Jesus is calling us to be alert, awake, and prayerful.
Father God, would You help us by giving us the will and the power (the desire and the ability) so that we live according to Your good purpose (Philippians 2:13). Would You help us to actively push back against the “current” of the world that would cause us to drift off-course or out to sea. And we ask that You give us a spirit of grace to pray and obey all of Your commands. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
May you have grace to stay awake,
Pastor Andrew & Your Rock Staff
