Point Out The Road for Me to Follow

“Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow.  Lead me by Your truth and teach me, for You are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in You.”  (Psalm 25:4-5 NLT)

I remember a big day for me back in March of 1990 when I went with my dad to the DMV to get my driver’s license.  I barely passed the driving portion of the test…and the written portion for that matter, but somehow, I passed. 🙂  That day the State of Colorado gave me a license to drive a motorized vehicle on every public road in America, without any supervision.  Crazy!  I could get into a vehicle and go wherever I wanted.  The problem was that I had no idea how to get anywhere. One of the first things I had to do was buy a map.  And for those of you born after 1990…No – there wasn’t a map app to download.  That didn’t happen until 2005 when Google Maps was unveiled…a program/app that changed forever how people around the world navigate while driving.

In a similar way (give me some grace with this comparison 😊), Jesus came to the earth 2000 years ago to give us new life…no longer to live under the Law or according to the flesh, but to live in full submission to the Spirit…which is the ONLY way to truly live!  (Rom 6:14, 8:3-4, 8:13; 2 Cor 3:3; Gal 5:18, 6:8 and many more verses)  Jesus told us in John 16 that the world was about to get a serious upgrade…a ‘game changer’.  He was going to send us the Holy Spirit!

“…It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away the Counselor [Holy Spirit] will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you…But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.”  (John 16:7, 13 NIV)

Now could you imagine getting in your vehicle now and using a paper map to try and navigate when you now have access to Google Maps?  No way!  You are going to use Google Maps to give you step-by-step directions to your destination – because you know it will get you to your destination and almost certainly faster than you could do it on your own.  And it will also redirect you if there is an accident or heavy traffic, and even direct you back to the fastest route if you take a wrong turn?   Does this sound familiar when we think about the Holy Spirit?  🙂  Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit to give us step-by-step directions in life, to warn us if we are heading into traffic, to redirect us if we take a wrong turn, and so much more! 

By His divine power [Holy Spirit], God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the one who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence.”  (2 Peter 1:3 NLT)

Why is it that we are willing to surrender our ways to a Google Maps app and follow it wherever it leads us, yet, we often struggle with trust and the surrender of our daily walk and lives to His direction and path even though we know it leads to life? 

If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage—our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit].  (Gal 5:25 AMP)

Lord, In the words of Moses, we ask you to teach us your ways so that we may know you and find favor with you.  In the words of David, we ask you to search us and know our hearts.  Test us and know our anxious thoughts and reveal anything in us that offends you, and lead us along the road to everlasting life.  And in the words of Jesus, the Holy Spirit gives life and the flesh counts for nothing, so may we live our lives in lock-step with the Spirit so that we may walk in the ways of the Lord and live in your presence and for your glory – all the days of our lives.  Amen.   (Exod 33:13; Ps 139:23-24; Jn 6:63)
