Our Daily Bread
Stop! Before you read any further, ponder this question…What is our daily bread?
Jesus tells us how to pray in Matthew 6 and in Luke 11 and part of this prayer is an ask for God to give us “our daily bread”. I don’t believe He was concerned here with us having physical bread, although I love to eat good bread. Often times I hear people refer to the “daily bread” as reading the Bible. But think about it, if the Bible was our daily bread, why would we need to ask God to “give us our daily bread”? All we would need to do is grab a Bible and read it. I am not discounting the need to read the Bible. I believe knowledge of the Bible is critically important in our faith walk as it gives us direction like a compass into the paths of holiness and righteousness. Sadly only 32% of Christians who attend a Protestant church read from their Bible daily. And what is even more disturbing is that this percentage drops to 9% for Christian Millennials in America. Bible illiteracy in the body of Christ is a scary thing! And although reading our Bible is extremely important, do not confuse this with the Daily Bread that we are to ask for.
In John 5:39, Jesus says, “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”
And then in John 6:35 & 48, Jesus tells us straight up, “I am the bread of life!” He then says “Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever entrusts themselves to me will never be thirsty.”
We serve a God who created us for the purpose of intimate relationship. His desire from Genesis to Revelation is to dwell with us and us with Him. “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.” (Rev 21:3) He created us in His image as His treasured possession and He desires more than anything to dwell with us. But in order to dwell with God, we must come to Jesus and entrust our lives to Him! In John 15:8 & 10 Jesus makes the clear distinction that our lives are meaningless if we don’t remain in Him and in His love… and this requires obedience to His ways. But if we abide in Jesus and walk in His ways, we receive the “bread of life”, then as a result, our lives WILL bear much fruit!
Lord, we ask you for the bread of life! Jesus, you are our bread. May we eat of you. May we hear your voice and follow closely to your footsteps. Help us by your Spirit to come to you and submit to your ways. May we learn from you as the eyes of our heart remain on you alone and not on the things of this world. May our hunger and thirst for you increase as we behold you and learn from you! We love you Jesus. Amen!
We love you!
