Numbering Our Days

4 “Lord, make me aware of my end and the number of my days so that I will know how short-lived I am. 5 In fact, you have made my days [in this age] just inches long, and my life span [in this age] is as nothing to you [because of my eternity with you]. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor.

6 Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them. 7 “Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you. 8 Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.

Last week Pastor Mike and Pastor Francis did an excellent job of reminding us that we are eternal beings and this mortal body will only last for a short time. Using a rope analogy, they showed us that in light of eternity our days on earth are just inches long (Psalm 39:5). 

Thankfully, that’s not a bad thing. If we are friends of Jesus and children of God, then we will be richly welcomed into an eternal kingdom (2 Peter 1:11) that is more incredible than anything we could ever imagine (1 Cor 2:9). 

However, it’s important that we keep the end in mind. No one begins building a skyscraper and says “We’ll just wing it,” or “Let’s start and just see what takes shape,”. No, there’s a lot of planning, engineering, and calculating that goes into the shape, size, materials, and supports for a building like that. 

In the same way. Our lives need to be “built” with the end in mind. Let’s not listen to the foolishness of the world and lies of the enemy that would tell us to forget about That Day and just live for the now; or be conformed to the patterns of this world (Rom 12:2) which only focuses on the here and now. Rather, let’s be a people who live boldly for eternity, building our life on the rock of Jesus’ teachings (Matt 7:24). 


Father God, help us to remember how short this life is, and that what we do now will impact how we’re received into your kingdom. Don’t let us fall into the craziness that would say, “This life is all there is,” but instead help us to–by faith–remember that we have the opportunity to store up Heavenly Treasures (Matt 6:19) where Jesus is preparing a place for us (John 14:3).  Amen
