Living in the Power of the Spirit

“For I will not dare to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God…”   Rom 15:18

 

The Apostle Paul didn’t want to talk about anything except what was accomplished by the power of the Spirit of God.  We wouldn’t have much to talk about if that was the case for us today.  So what’s the secret to accomplishing things for God? What’s the key to operating by the power of the Spirit of God? Prayer. 

I believe that prayer is essential.  But allow me to clarify what I mean by “prayer”. Sometimes we begin to “pray” and ask for things we think we need or situations we think we need changed.  This is not prayer, and God often does not answer these requests (James 4:3). 

Prayer begins with renewing our minds so that we can test and approve God’s will (Rom 12:2).  It shouldn’t flow out of our own thoughts, but rather by the leading of the Holy Spirit, like we read in 1 Corinthians 2 where Paul writes that, 

“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” (1 Cor 2:10-11)

Because we have the Spirit living inside of us, we have access to understanding God’s perspective about situations. When we take a moment to pray (talk with Holy Spirit about what God thinks and wants) then we can speak those things out. As we do, we are enacting and decreeing the will of God into situations, and this is where we see great things happen. 

I want to encourage us to engage into longer and deeper times of prayer. Let’s not just jump into a list of things we need God to do. Pause for a minute, ask Holy Spirit to guide our prayers by showing us what’s on God’s heart and mind. Then, decree His will over these situations. As we do, I believe we will begin to see the signs and wonders that Paul wrote about through the power of the Spirit of God.
