Living in God’s Presence
Dear Rock Family,
We can’t wait to be together this Sunday for Family Breakfast Sunday (Jesus, fellowship, and bacon is a really good combo).
Over the last year God has been teaching me about living in His presence. This Sunday I will be encouraging us to grow in this aspect of our faith. Until then I want to draw our attention to one man in Scripture that embodies living in God’s presence.
The person I am referring to is Enoch. We are given very little Scripture about him and yet learn a lot. In total, there are 3 passages that give us details of Enoch’s life (Gen 5:21-24, Heb 11:5, Jude 1:14). Let me a highlight a few verses:
*Genesis 5:22 (LSB), “Then Enoch walked with God 300 years after he became the father of Methuselah…”
*Genesis 5:24 (LSB), “Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”
*Hebrews 11:5 (LSB), “By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for prior to being taken up, he was approved as being pleasing to God.”
This language of “walking with God” can be understood as living in close intimacy with God. Or as the New Testament conveys it, walking in step with the Spirit (Gal 5:25). Enoch lived in union with God for over 300 years (Gen 5:22) and in that time lived in such a manner that he pleased God. In the Greek, this can be translated as Enoch was ‘entirely gratifying to God’. In fact, he was so gratifying that God took Enoch straight to Heaven, without ever experiencing death on earth.
This man, of whom we are given very little information, encourages me to live a life of unbroken fellowship with God and to please Him in all that I do. In preparation for this Sunday, I would like to challenge us to examine our lives with the help of the Holy Spirit and ask what we could adjust to more fully live in God’s presence and in such a way as to please God and be entirely gratifying to Him. Who knows, He may take you right to heaven.
May the Lord bless you this week.
