Living A Life Worthy of The Lord

“…We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding…in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way, bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” Col 1:9-12

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (understanding), so that you may know Him better (grow in the knowledge of God)…that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you…As a prisoner for the Lord, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Eph 1:17-18; 4:1

Over the past couple weeks, we have focused our Sunday mornings on narrowing the gap between our knowledge of the Lord (His will) and our obedience to Him.  When we are out of balance and have knowledge without obedience or obedience without knowledge, this can have a devastating impact on our lives and on others.  But when knowledge and obedience come together, this is true faith! Faith is an understanding and believing followed by obedience in action.  And this positions us to become the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor 5:21)!  Philippians 3:9 tells us that our righteousness from God comes by faith!  And from this place of Godly righteousness (not self-righteousness), we experience the power of the Holy Spirit working within us – revealing His glory!   “…then your righteousness (in the Lord) will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard (glory will be the after-effect of our faith!)” (Isaiah 58:8)

We also focused in on becoming a Dwelling Place, which also comes from knowledge and understanding and continues into action and obedience.  The dwelling place is not a stagnant position with the Lord. It is the in-step following of the Holy Spirit’s leading.

With the above in mind, this week I want to encourage and urge us all to “live a life worthy of the calling we have received from the Lord, that we may please the Lord in every way!”  It is quite clear in the Word that EVERY person has a CALLING from the Lord, and although there are unique aspects, giftings, and talents that each of us are to contribute to the body of Christ, there is also a common CALLING the Lord is asking each and every member of the body of Christ to uphold in order to please God and live worthy of our calling and purpose!  If you are wondering what that is, re-read the verses above.  I will restate them here as well.  Our unified calling and purpose, is to:

  1.       Bear fruit in every good work. (The “good works” are only those that are in alignment with God’s will. And this fruit is the harvest from sharing the gospel and discipleship.)
  2.       Grow in the knowledge of God. This requires an abiding in Him, a waiting upon Him, a beholding Him, a wholehearted worship…revealing the will of God by the Spirit. (Rom 12:2)
  3.       Have great endurance, patience, and joyful thanks to the Lord.   This is the fruit of walking in step with the Spirit.
  4.       Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. This also is the fruit of walking in step with the Spirit.
  5.       Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Jesus is our peace and we receive this peace through His blood! (Col 1:20)  And this peace becomes the bond or the glue that unites us together as we make every effort to love the body by the power of the Holy Spirit.

May we live our lives in full pursuit of our calling, that our Lord would receive the glory due His name!

I love you,
Pastor Mike and your Rock Staff
