Jars Of Clay With A Heavenly Purpose!
“O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter. We are all the work of your hand.” Isaiah 64:8
I love how the Lord helps us to understand things by revealing them to us through symbolism. There is so much symbolism in the Bible…fishers of men, the potter and the clay, bread of life, light of the world, good Shepherd, fire, the dove, oil, wine, lion of the tribe of Judah, olive tree, sheep, sword of the Spirit, shield of faith, etc…you get the point. This symbolism, given to us through God’s Word, is intended to enlighten us to see his plans and purposes for us in simplistic, easy-to-understand ways. Have you ever been around someone who is so smart that when they try to explain something, it goes right over your head? How good and loving is our Lord, the creator of the universe, to kindly and humbly explain things, using easy symbolism, so that we can understand our Creator.
This Sunday we are going to have a special guest speaker who will be preaching with a potter’s wheel and I pray this gives us deeper insight into the significance of our Maker and the purpose of our lives on this earth. There are multiple times in the Bible where the Lord gives us the beautiful symbolism of our God as the potter and us as clay. Obviously we aren’t clay and God isn’t a potter, but through this symbolism we can better understand the relationship we are to have towards our heavenly Father, helping us to posture our heart and actions correctly!
Through the Word, we are also given insight into the life of Jesus on this earth, showing us the perfect example of how to respond as clay to the potter while living on this earth. In John 14:10, Jesus says, “…The words I say to you are not my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing His work.” And then just before Jesus went to the cross, He prays, “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” (Jn 17:4) Our heavenly Father, the creator of all things (including us), has a plan for each of us on this earth. However, because of a fallen world – due to mankind’s prideful ways – not everyone has the opportunity to live out their life. But for those who do, I pray that we live wisely – loving, trusting, and serving our God (the Potter) with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength so that we complete the work given to us by the Potter, fully living out the will of God in our lives!
Lord, May we never become brittle or hardened in your hands, but help us to remain malleable, soft, and workable so that You can form us into Your masterpiece, to be created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which You as the Potter have prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph 2:10) And may we not be a people who quarrel with our Maker or questions what the Potter is making, (Is 45:9) but as jars of clay, may we walk humbly before our Maker and carry the treasure of Christ in us, revealing the all-surpassing power of God to the world! (2 Cor 4:7)
May we be anointed “jars of clay” that carry the heavenly presence of our Maker and the aroma of Christ to those who are being saved! And may the ministry of the Spirit flow through us at all times as we raise up, empower, and equip the body of Christ for the work of the ministry!
I love you! See you Saturday for the foodbank (with lunch served afterward) and Sunday as we set our hearts before the Lord!
