HUMILITY… The Only Way to Walk With God
“…What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to WALK HUMBLY WITH your God.” Micah 6:8
There are many definitions for humility, but Biblically speaking it comes down to this: “Being completely surrendered to God or dependent on God.” It is a heart that is contrite (repentant) and fully submissive to God’s will. The opposite of humility is pride, but it isn’t quite that simple. We are born with pride, but humility is cultivated when we spend time with Jesus, when we spend time in prayer…the kind of prayer that changes us. I’m not referring to the prayers where we are asking God to change our circumstances or the circumstances around us. I am referring to the kind of prayers that come out of seeing our inadequacy and our sin. It is the Isaiah 6 type of prayer where Isaiah cries out, “Woe is me! I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips….and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” It is from this heart position, that the Holy Spirit then has access to do the inner healing to our heart…the atoning work. We see, in Isaiah 6, the seraph took the coal from the altar in the throne room and touched Isaiah’s lips and his “guilt was taken away and sin atoned for”.
If I were to equate humility to something in our everyday lives, I would look at it like the motor oil in our vehicles. We don’t often check how much oil we have in our vehicle when we get in for a drive, but if we aren’t aware and careful to change our oil and put in new oil when needed, it will begin to affect the vehicle’s performance and the engine will eventually seize up.
God desires a people who WALK HUMBLY WITH Him…not those who come to Him once and make their appeal…That’s just the start. Jesus is the “author of our faith”, but He is also the “perfecter”. This demands a walk of humility. Or as Hebrews 12:1-2 says, “…let us run with perseverance the race that has been marked out for us, with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” This is the humble life we are called to! A life requiring “hearing and seeing” hearts that are humble and repentant…with a whole-hearted devotion to Him. It is in the humble posture of repentance, that Jesus brings healing to our hearts (1 John 1:9) and times of refreshing (Acts 3:19).
In 1904, Evan Roberts, a young preacher, was used by God in the Welsh Revival after he began to cry out, “O God, bend me!”. This posture was needed in order for God to use him as a key figure in the Welsh revival. This is humility! Revival in America will happen when God finds those who will cry out from their heart, “O God, bend me!”.
Every revival on the face of this planet has involved key people that played an important role in stewarding God’s outpouring and glory. But they were nothing special. It wasn’t their great abilities, or wisdom, or power. It was their humility, their complete dependence on God, that positioned them as vessels God could use to pour out His Spirit! In Acts 2, there was a Joel 2 outpouring of the Spirit that birthed the NT Church. Who did the Lord choose as vessels? Those who went into a room and WAITED in intense prayer for 10 days! There was a preparation, a consecration of hearts and minds, heart-changing prayer that produced humility (an oil change) that had to be established in order to be used as a vehicle for the outpouring of the Spirit.
I believe we are in an opportune time for this type of outpouring to occur again! But it will require a people who get on their knees and pray. It will require “vehicles” with new oil…with hearts prepared for the outpouring of the Spirit. 1 Peter 5:5 and James 4:6,10 tells us that God will oppose or resist those who have pride, but will give grace and lift up those who walk in humility. If we don’t get the pride out of our hearts, God will resist us. I’m not referring to the obvious stuff like anger, love of money and success, and other sins that are quite easy to identify. I am referring to the deeper things that are harder to detect and require a prayer life that helps to root out these underlying seeds of pride that haven’t yet produced “bad fruit”. This is David’s Psalm 139:23-24 prayer, “Search my heart!” Those with a pure heart (without the seeds of pride) will see and experience God. May we be the jars of clay that are able to house the “all-surpassing power of God – while being hard pressed on every side, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down…but not crushed, in despair, abandoned, or destroyed.” May we be those who carry in our body the death of Jesus (HUMILITY), so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body! (2 Cor 4:7-10) May our humility be evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
Lord Jesus, we pray for the Refiner’s Fire! May this fire refine our hearts and remove the impurities (the seeds) that can turn into pride! May we walk out our lives in Humility…in step with the Holy Spirit, bearing good fruit…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control! May our lives be fully devoted to You. Here we are Lord, send us! Amen.
I love you all! See you Sunday…and hopefully tonight for prayer at 7pm!
