Humility Now…Exalted Then
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12
Dear Rock family,
One of the things the Lord has been highlighting to me lately, and reminded me of again this Sunday as Pastor Mike and Andrew set the vision for our house, is that biblical humility only makes sense when our hearts are set on the age to come.
Scripture consistently frames humility not just as a character trait, but as alignment with God’s coming Kingdom. Peter tells us, “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time He may exalt you” (1 Peter 5:6). The caution in reading this scripture without an age to come perspective is that we can form an incorrect expectation of what God will do for us now. The “proper time” is not primarily in this age, but it points forward to when Christ returns and His Kingdom is revealed.
The prophets speak the same way. Isaiah describes a future where God establishes His reign from Zion, the proud are brought low, and the humble are preserved and lifted up (Isaiah 2; Isaiah 65–66). Jesus makes this really practical in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:2–11). When He talks about meekness and humility, He’s not saying those things will make life easier right now. In fact, most of the promises He gives point forward. “The meek inherit the earth.” “Those who hunger for righteousness will be satisfied (in the age to come).” “Those who are poor in spirit (humble) will inherit the Kingdom.” Jesus is teaching us to live today with our eyes on what’s coming, trusting that He will judge rightly and lift us up when He returns in glory.
This means humility is not passivity or weakness. It is faithful obedience to Jesus in a world that rewards self-exaltation. It is choosing to trust Jesus rather than inserting our own control, and surrendering to His leadership even when it doesn’t increase our status or bring recognition. We do this because we believe the future that God foretold is real.
Lord, we ask You for revelation and for strength to embrace humility in our own lives. Help us not to see it as something for today only, but as preparation for the Kingdom that is coming. Teach us not to conform to this age, but to the age You are about to reveal. As You humbled Yourself before entering into glory, help us take up our cross and follow You in the same way. Amen.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Marcus and your Rock Staff
