Great Are The Commands of The Lord

“Even perfection has its limits,
but your commands have no limit. ”  Psalm 119:96 NLT

Our church-wide, Bible-in-a-year, reading plan has had us in Psalm 119 this week; and I am so touched by how the Psalmist celebrates the words, decrees, instructions, and commands of God. As I meditate on the stanzas in this chapter it stirs up two thoughts:

First, if I think it’s strange how amazed the psalmist is at the commands of God, there’s a better chance that I have a lot to learn, rather than that the author of the Word of God is wrong or exaggerative.

Think about it. If the Psalmist says God’s instructions are, “more valuable to me than millions in gold and silver” (Psalm 119:72). And I think, “They’re pretty good”.  One of us is wrong, and it’s probably not the Holy Spirit.

So, clearly I’ve got some growing to do in this area.

Which brings me to my second thought, What did the Psalmist see in books like Exodus, Deuteronomy, and Leviticus, that I’m overlooking? What secret of the Kingdom of God was he permitted to know that I haven’t yet matured to understand?

Young kids (the immature) think that the only thing that tastes good is sugary treats or chicken nuggets and fries. But as you mature you realize that there are foods that are way better than what you loved as a kid.

If we think the Bible isn’t the best thing ever, and are arrogant enough to say that parts are boring, that signals that we still have a lot to learn from our teacher the Holy Spirit.

Father God, help us where we’ve overlooked the value of your word.  Help us to see what David and the Psalmists saw. Help us to value you and your commands, instructions, decrees, and letters to us. Shift our appetite to become a people that would feast on your word and treasure it in our hearts.

I love you all very much,
Pastor Andrew Nemeth & The Rock Staff
