FIX Our Gaze on Jesus and Run the Race
“Therefore we never give up! Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them (the momentary troubles) and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we FIX OUR GAZE on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Cor 4:16-18 NLT
The Lord is stirring us in this season to fix our gaze on Jesus. This is not just a good idea, it is critically important in the time we are in – as things in this world are accelerating at a pace we have never seen before. The words “fix our gaze”, mean to “take aim”, “stare at” or “direct one’s attention to”. When the Spirit is on the move, the enemy also starts moving – to distract and counter the move of the Spirit. We must Fix Our Gaze on Jesus and not allow distractions to derail us.
When driving down the highway at 75 mph, I don’t fix my gaze on all the other vehicles or on the guardrails or the other driving lanes. I keep my eyes fixed – looking forward at the road ahead of me and this keeps me from veering off the road or from hitting other vehicles. To crash at highway speeds could cost my life. In the same way, we are NEVER to take our eyes off of Jesus. Peter got out of the boat and literally walked on the waves of the storm until he took his eyes off of Jesus and put them on the storm, and nearly drowned. If you are ‘sinking’, I would question the gaze of your eyes.
If you have ever been in a track and field race, you know that you need to have a single focus. You must keep your mind on the race and get to the finish line as quickly as possible. Can you imagine the gun going off and you begin to run the race and then you realize you forgot to lock your car. So you divert off the track to get your keys, run to your car, and lock the door. You then come back and finish the race. I don’t think there would be any surprise that you would not only come in last place, but you would be disqualified from the race. No one in their right mind would do this, yet how often do we become distracted from the things God has set before us in order to focus on other worldly things “that will soon be gone”. Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us to throw off EVERYTHING that hinders us so that we can run with all determination and perseverance the race God has set before each of us with our eyes FIXED on Jesus!
We are in a time on this earth where there are more distractions around us than ever before! I want to encourage us to remain grounded in Jesus and in the Word of God – being led by the Spirit in all things and on every occasion. We need to spend undistracted, alone time with Jesus every morning, throughout the day, and in the evenings. May we make this our NUMBER ONE priority! This will keep us on the right track. We can’t afford to become distracted and I don’t want anyone disqualified! The Apostle Paul understood this race well. In Phil 3:13-14 he says, “One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” And in 1 Cor 9:24-27 Paul tells us, “Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step…Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.”
PRAYER: Lord – May we run the race you have set before us with the eyes of our heart and mind fixed on Jesus! May we finish with the same words as Paul…”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith! Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness!” (2 Tim 4:7-8)
We love you!
