Evaluating Your Daily Against the Backdrop of Eternity

What Jesus has purchased for us and will soon give to us as our eternal inheritance is beyond words. To call it “amazing” hardly captures this reality. In the age to come…He will abolish death and give us eternal life (Luke 20:34–36). He will usher in His glorious rulership over all the nations and dethrone Satan as the “god of this age”. (Matthew 25:31–34; 2 Corinthians 4:4). He will put an end to suffering and persecution and bring us into unending glory and joy (Romans 8:18). These promises are meant to strengthen our hope and help us walk worthy of Jesus in this life.

I first began to be deeply impacted by these truths in my early twenties, and they have remained one of the most consistent influences on my walk with Jesus. They have strengthened me, convicted me, and helped me resist being consumed by the cares of this life. They have kept my focus on the good works that produce eternal reward when I stand before Him. I don’t live this out perfectly. I still fall short and often need to repent when I find myself living more for this present age than the one to come. Yet even in my weakness, the Lord uses these truths to continue to mature me and to draw my heart back to Him again and again. This Sunday, we will explore together what the Scriptures say about the temporary nature of this age and the glory of the age to come.

Until then, I want to encourage you to resist the temptation to cling to what is passing away. Evaluate your daily activities against the backdrop of eternity. Invest your energy in the things Jesus has commanded…good works, serving, holiness, prayer, etc…that will bear fruit for unending ages. May the glory of what He has died for stir our hearts with fresh love and affection for Him. May we be a people marked not by the temporal cares of this age, but by the eternal hope of the age to come.

Let’s pray together:

Jesus, strengthen us by the same Spirit that strengthened You, that we may fix our eyes on the joy set before us and run with endurance the race You have marked out for us (Heb. 12:1-2). Keep us from pouring our energy into what will not last when we stand before You. Make us steadfast, wholehearted, and immovable in the good works You’ve given us to do, knowing that in You our labor is never in vain (1 Cor. 15:58).

Until He Comes,
Pastor Marcus and your Rock Staff
