Come & Drink — God Is That Good

“If anyone is thirsty, let them come to Me and drink…and rivers of living water will flow from within them.” John 7:37-38

This morning I felt a burden for the church. Not just The Rock, but the Church of Colorado, and the Lord began to impress upon me the importance of His goodness.  I believe there are a good number of people who love Jesus, go to church, and know how to act as Christians, but inside they are feeling a heaviness and sense of being overwhelmed by the things of this world. And we know the Christian response…”Cast your cares on Him.”  But what does that mean? How do we actually throw off things that we care about…our family, our friends, our finances, our jobs, etc.  I believe the secret to this isn’t trying to get rid of our cares, it is in knowing who our Heavenly Father is…His nature and character…His goodness.  He is the giver of all good gifts! (James 1:17)  And gifts are free – not earned, but we need to be able to receive them. An orphan may see a stack of gifts under the Christmas tree, but never open them or even look to see if they are for him, because he can’t imagine that someone would buy him gifts.

We see how Jesus reveals this deficit of understanding for “sons” who see themselves as orphans in the story of the prodigal son. (Luke 15) Both the prodigal son and the older brother had no idea how generous, kind, and compassionate their father was. The younger brother took his inheritance from his father and lost it all. In desperation, he finally returned to ask his father if he could come back as a servant. But the father had great compassion on his son and with tears streaming down his face, he hugged and kissed his son, showing unreserved and undeserved love and grace to this son. A huge party was thrown and his position as son was immediately restored. With the similar ‘orphan’ mindset, the older brother was so angry because his father had never thrown him a party.  His father responded in a mind-blowing way by saying (in my translation) that everything the father had was his!  EVERYTHING!  He could have had a party every day.  In the same way, as sons of our Heavenly Father through Jesus, we have been given access to EVERYTHING the Father has…we just don’t often realize it.

“All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” John 16:15

One other important revelation is in Exodus 33 & 34 where Moses has a remarkable dialog/negotiation with God. God tells Moses to take the Israelites and go into the Promise Land without Him, but Moses responds that “If your presence does not go with us, don’t send us up from here.”  The Lord responds to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”  To which Moses responds, “Now show me your glory.”  But to this the Lord responds “I will show you all my goodness!”  The Lord needed to reveal His goodness in order to sustain Moses throughout the wilderness journey. I believe that when we face trials and struggles (wilderness times), our faith is tested, but when we live in the knowledge of His goodness, mercy, and loving kindness; our faith is strengthened and we live in and from His Goodness!

Lord, You are worthy of all our praise and your goodness no one can fathom. We will declare the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and meditate on Your wondrous works. We will tell of the power of Your awesome acts, and we will declare your GOODNESS. We will celebrate your abundant GOODNESS and sing of your righteousness!  (Psalm 145:3,5-7 as a prayer)

May His goodness overwhelm us and strengthen us for the coming battles!

I love you!
