Building the Kingdom in a Region

‘When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. ‘  (Acts of the Apostles 8:14-15 NLT)

Jerusalem is about 35 miles away from Samaria. By today’s standards, that’s maybe half an hour drive depending on traffic. But to walk that distance during the first century would take you eleven hours or more.

The apostles in Jerusalem weren’t just interested in building their congregation, or just ministering to the people in their backyard; they understood the importance of building the Kingdom of God throughout the region.

Similarly, our church is called to the region. We love and serve the people closest to us, but we also feel a special connection to churches throughout Colorado. From Pueblo to Ft Collins and everything in between.

Tonight we have a special opportunity to pray with and for other leaders in the region. And just like Peter & John left the good work they were doing in Jerusalem to believe God for an awakening amongst believers in another city, we are going to pray that the Holy Spirit would be poured out up-and-down the front range of Colorado.

Thankfully, technology has made it so we don’t have to walk for eleven hours to do it. Instead, we can hop in a car and meet at The Rock, or jump on the computer and engage online.

What’s also interesting is, if you read the passages before and after Acts 8:14, we see that Philip (who was already ministering in Samaria) was clearly operating in the power of Holy Spirit with “signs and great miracles(Acts 8:13).  And yet, the believers that he evangelized hadn’t yet received the Spirit.

Sometimes God uses one person for one work, and a different person for another work. Could it be that our prayers tonight are exactly what’s needed for these other regions? Might it be that although the leaders around Colorado are doing great works, our prayers may be just what God wants to use for breakthrough in the region?

I hope you’ll be able to join us tonight (and every last Wednesday of the month) for our special nights of regional prayer and worship.

With love and anticipation,
Pastor Andrew & your Rock Staff
