Build Each Other Up
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:11 CSB
I hope you had as much fun on Sunday as I did. Sharing a meal together, getting to know each other better, and discussing how to apply what God is showing us in Scripture.
As our teaching team has been studying Koinonia (the Greek term that often gets translated as “fellowship”) I’m beginning to see it more and more in Scripture. Like when you buy a car and then begin to see that car everywhere (Baader-Meinhof phenomenon), I’m seeing the Word of God point us to community and fellowship more often.
But I’m also noticing how Biblical fellowship is different from our modern-American culture. A society of fast food, quick calls, instant messages, individualization, and self-reliance; where our social connections tend to be a mile wide, but only an inch deep. Even in the “church” we see culture’s impact. Instead of fellowship and communion (Acts 2:42) there’s online church, instead of iron sharpening iron (Proverbs 27:17) we have teaching without accountability (podcasts), and corporate prayer times replaced with SOS distress calls to the Lord. That’s not how God designed us!
We’re meant to live in a community where we are known, loved, encouraged, and built up. And I think “build up” is such a perfect phrase for God to use. To build something requires you to see what isn’t already there–to see the potential. For people, I think their potential could be their calling or their destiny. When you’re building something in the natural, there’s a lot of cutting away of things that shouldn’t be there (clearing trees or excavating dirt) and a joining together of what should be there (nailing boards and joining walls).
In our lives, God often uses other people who love us and see who God is building us to be, to lovingly hold us accountable, and to cut away what shouldn’t be there. As well as to speak into our lives what should be there…to encourage us into our God-given destiny.
That’s the kind of fellowship we are desiring for our church family. And we are seeing that as God highlights fellowship and calls us into it, He is also giving us the tools to help each other foster these types of relationships.
Let’s continue to grow together,
Pastor Andrew and your Rock Staff
