Awakened Unto Discipleship

Dear Rock Family,

This past Sunday, Pastor Mike shared Charles Finney’s seven indicators of revival and showed how they connect with the Matthew 5 Beatitudes. When the Lord awakens people, we see an increase in repentance and sensitivity to the Spirit, prayer, humility, hunger for God’s Word, forgiveness, purity, and love for others.

The Beatitudes give us a portrait of a disciple of Christ that is living a spiritually revived life, and Matthew 5–7 shows us what this life looks like in practice… in our heart, relationships, desires, words, prayer, finances, forgiveness, love for enemies, and obedience to Jesus.

When God awakens someone and gives them a heart to follow Him, Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount should become a discipleship roadmap. Here, Jesus reveals what matters to God, what He calls righteous, what He will reward, and what will be exposed “on that Day” when He returns. It teaches us to obey Him faithfully, in this present age, in light of the age to come and the reality of eternal judgment, even as we pray, “Your kingdom come.” (Matt 6:10)

This Sunday, we will continue our study of the Beatitudes and examine how they are to be lived out throughout the rest of the Sermon on the Mount.
