As You See The Day Approaching
Over the last two weeks Pastor Mike & Pastor Marcus have pointed towards the age to come (The Day which is approaching) with a great illustration of a narrow bridge with two railings. One side is the Love and Faithfulness of God, the other is the Fear of the Lord. One side is Ephesians 1-3, the other is Ephesians 4-6.
In both of these messages we learn that our eternal future is secured by two things: 1) God’s great grace and 2) Our obedience to His commands.
Another place we see this reiterated is in Hebrews 10. In verse 19-22 the writer describes the confidence we have to come into the Most Holy Place because of what Jesus did for us and because of who He is as our high priest over God’s house. And then how our hearts are sprinkled clean with Christ’s blood and our bodies are washed the pure water of the Spirit. This is God’s great grace!
And then in verse 23 the writer brings in the necessity of our response – our obedience to His commands. We are called to hold firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, living in faith and obedience with a pure heart in full assurance of faith.
This week, I want to build on that theme by looking specifically at Hebrews 10:23-25 (CSB):
“Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.”
We see in this passage the overlap of personal disciplines and corporate rhythms. Our spiritual formation is personal, but it is not private. The word of God instructs us to do things individually so that the whole congregation can be built up and strengthened.

Father God, would you help us to live in that intersection of personal disciplines and corporate rhythms. Would you help us to encourage one another with the urgency that comes from seeing “the day approaching”. Holy Spirit, help us to lean into corporate rhythms and recognize our need for the other “living stones” that make up your temple (1 Peter 2:4-5). We love you and pray that you will continue to “join us together in love” (Colossians 2:2) as we see the day approaching.
Be blessed,
Pastor Andrew and your Rock Staff
