Agreeing with the Intercession of Jesus

“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,”
     – John 17:20 ESV

I have been drawn to and involved in corporate prayer in the body of Christ for the majority of my ministry, and I have often heard the phrase, “Jesus is at the right hand of the Father praying for you”. This statement is true and is drawn from the revelation given to us in Romans and Hebrews.

[Rom 8:34 ESV] 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died–more than that, who was raised–who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

[Heb 7:25 ESV] 25 Consequently, he (Jesus)  is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

So the question might arise, “If Jesus is praying for me, what is He praying for?” I believe some of the answer to that question is found in John 17.

In John 17, we are given a “behind the scenes” look into Jesus’ prayer life. Yes, there are other publicly recorded prayers of Jesus (Jn. 11:41-42 – Prayer before He raises Lazarus from the dead; Matt. 11:25-26 – Prayer of Thanks for His disciples; Matt. 6:19-13 – The Lord’s Prayer; etc…), but none with the depth of revelation that compares to what we find in this chapter of John.

Here are the things that were on our Lord’s lips the night before He went to the cross to secure eternal salvation, and I believe are still being spoken in heaven over your life as He awaits His return.

  1. Unity and Oneness (17:11, 20-23)
  2. Joy (17:13)
  3. Kept from the evil one (17:15)
  4. To be set apart for holy service to God (17:17)
  5. To be with Him and see His Glory (17:24)
  6. The Father’s love for the Son would be in us (17:25-26)

We will dive into these precious prayers this Sunday, but I want to encourage you to begin praying these truths for yourself and others this week. Agreeing with Jesus in prayer is one of the most important and powerful things we can do as we wait for the return of the King.

With much love,
Pastor Marcus and The Rock staff.
