A Call To Action – To Love
“Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” James 1:22-24
Let me start by saying how encouraged I am to see the body of Christ at The Rock step up and engage in the commands of Jesus in ways I haven’t seen in past seasons. I am seeing and hearing of many testimonies of people stepping out and sharing the gospel, praying for the sick, helping the hurting, engaging in discipleship, spending unhurried and uninterrupted time with Jesus, coming to corporate times of prayer…Loving Jesus and others with actions and in truth! My encouragement is to keep running this race and don’t grow weary in doing good!
Jesus tells us in Matt 7:24-25 that the ones who respond in action to the commands of Jesus will be like a person who built their house on the rock and because their foundation was on the rock (by putting into action the commands of Christ), their house did not collapse when the storms came. Isaiah 58:11 tells us that we respond in action to God’s ways, “we will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail!” I love that we serve a God who rewards those who work diligently for Him and obey His commands.
Now although we are making great progress, the caution is to ‘let off the gas’. But Hebrews 12:1 tells us to throw off the weights that hinder us and run with perseverance the race marked out for us (by God). And Eph 2:10 tells us that the ‘race marked out for us’ is the “good works” we were created in Christ Jesus to do! The beauty of all this is that we have been given an empowering grace of the Holy Spirit for this godly life we are to live! (2 Peter 1:3)
I want to end with this encouragement and instruction. LOVE is the greatest action for us to follow, and this ‘love’ that God calls us to is a love that comes from Him. Be careful not to confuse the world’s definition of love with God’s definition of love. Jesus revealed what love is to the world when He laid down his life for us. And so we now are charged to love others in the same way. (1 Jn 3:16) This is a love that goes beyond human/worldly ability. But with Christ in us through the Spirit, we have been given supernatural strength to love our enemies, those who betray us, our in-laws & outlaws, and our brothers and sisters. For if we do not love those who we can see, how can we love God whom we can’t see. (1 Jn 4:20)
Lord Jesus, Would you forgive us for not loving with your love at times? May we know your love, so that others may know your love through our lives. And give us the grace to forgive and love others, no matter what they have done to us, because you first loved us and we gave up the right to hold unforgiveness when we received Your forgiveness. Jesus – Help us to daily die to ‘self’ as we daily pick up our cross and follow you. May we go from selfish to selfless so that your love can be a life-light to others around us! And may we obey all your commands for this is how we show you our love for you! (1 Jn 5:3) Amen.
I love you all dearly!
