What Foundation Are You Building On?

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.”
-Luke 6:46-48

This Sunday we have our Family Breakfast at 9am followed by a special service with an interactive and relational format.  We have used this format on the first Sunday since January and these times have been incredibly fun, encouraging, and strengthening – both relationally and spiritually.  This Sunday we will focus on the foundation we are building our lives on.  I want to encourage you to read and meditate on Luke 6:46-49 and Matthew 7:24-27 in preparation for Sunday.

These words spoken by Jesus occurred during the famous Sermon on the Mount and over the past couple of weeks have been highlighted to us as a church family.  If you missed Pastor Kristi’s message last Sunday, I would encourage you to watch it.  CLICK HERE

Here’s the thing…we all have the ability to live a life that looks good on the surface, but in Luke 6, Jesus reveals the critical importance of addressing what is beneath the surface…the heart…the foundation.

“For the good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.” (Luke 6:45)

My hope is that we take a deep dive this Sunday into the foundation of our lives and hearts so that we can make certain that we are building our lives (our houses) on a firm foundation, so that when the storms come (and they will come), what we have built will not be shaken or come crashing down.  This is so important to the kingdom and for our eternal reward and can often be overlooked in our daily living.

Jesus, We pray that you open the eyes of our heart this Sunday to see our lives on earth from a heavenly and eternal perspective.  May we see rightly and live holy and righteous lives that reveal the Father’s love to the world.  Teach us to walk in your ways that our lives may be built on your foundation and that when the actions of our lives are revealed by fire, our work will not be burned up, but will be treasures laid up in heaven. (1 Cor 3:13; Matt 6:20-21).  Thank you for our Rock family and that you are strengthening us, empowering us, and enlightening the eyes of our heart for the days ahead.  Amen.

May our lives be fully in Christ.  I look forward to our time together this Sunday. I love you all!

P.S.  Questions to consider as you read Luke 6:46-49 and Matthew 7:24-27

  1. How does the saying, “Actions speak louder than words”  correlate to Luke 6:46?
  2. What is the difference between the two builders?
  3. Why does Jesus emphasize the foundation more than the house?
  4. What would you identify as the “rock” and what would you identify as the “sand” in Matthew 7?
  5. What do you think Jesus means when He refers to the builder who “puts into practice” His words?
