The Kingship of Jesus
“For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods,”
Psalm 95:3
The Holy Spirit has recently been prompting me to meditate on the Kingship of Jesus. During our Converge conference, we had some powerful exhortations that called us to embrace the fear of the Lord and apply it to all areas of our lives. As one of these messages was being preached I felt the Holy Spirit say to me personally, “If you want to grow in your understanding of the fear of the Lord, meditate on Jesus as King.”
As those who have been raised in a democratic republic, we have never experienced someone having absolute power as an ancient King would have had over society. We get to shape society by voting for representatives that align with our values, and because of that, we tend to think negatively about anything that is absolutely authoritative. We bring this mindset into the Kingdom of God and tend to think that we have to fully agree with the values and commandments of Jesus before they are validated as absolute truth. But the reality of God’s Kingdom is that he has set His Son at His right hand as King over all things, and experiencing the benefits of His promises is dependent on our full surrender and obedience to Him as King.
I am so grateful for Jesus’ patience with me as I grow in my understanding of His position as King. I used to think that I had invited Jesus into “my life” and that it was mostly about “me” in this relationship, but the Holy Spirit has corrected me over the years to understand I have been invited into “His life” and the basis of our relationship is centered around Him. As I am writing this, I hear the words of John the Baptist resounding in my spirit, “He must increase, but I must decrease,” (Jn 3:30).
I like to meditate on Revelation 5 to calibrate my life to Jesus being King. In this passage, we see Jesus as the Lamb of God in the center of the throne, and all the saints and angels of heaven surrounding, bowing down, and worshiping Him. He is the center of focus in the throne room of heaven. The songs of worship are concerning His marvelous love shown to the saints in dying for them and sharing His Kingly authority with them. Their confession is that all power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory and blessing should be given to Him, because He is the only one able to bear the royal honor and use these resources to bring about the perfect will of His Father on the earth at His second coming. When I read this, I often ask for the Holy Spirit to enlighten the eyes of my heart and that I would see Jesus and respond to Him as the saints and angels respond to Him above.
I want to encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to give revelation of the Kingship of Jesus and for His grace to respond to Jesus’ leadership in the fear of the Lord.
Have a great week,
Pastor Marcus and The Rock Staff
