Are We Living For This Age Or The Age To Come?

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”  (Psalm 90:12)

Last Sunday, Pastor Marcus focused on 1 Peter 5:8-11, connecting humility to a necessary age-to-come perspective.  I want to continue in this same vein.

As we move into 2026, the Lord has been highlighting the importance of humility for our church.  Proverbs 22:4 links humility directly to the fear of the Lord.  And Proverbs 9:10 tells us that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”.  And 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 differentiates between the wisdom of this age and the wisdom of the age to come – which is “God’s secret wisdom…destined for our glory before time began.”  So, from all this, we can deduce that walking in humility is absolutely critical in order that we gain the wisdom of the coming age, revealed to us by the Holy Spirit, which if followed, will lead to eternal life.

You may know the story of the Titanic, the ship that was celebrated as the unsinkable ship. This massive ship was built with the best known technology and it was the Titanic’s Captain himself, Edward John Smith, who claimed that “not even God could sink this ship.”

On its maiden voyage in 1912, this ‘unsinkable’ ship was filled with 2,240 people including some of the wealthiest people in the world.  It was touted as the largest ship ever to set sail, and was a sight to see as it left Southampton, England with a final destination of New York City.  It was said by many that ‘nothing could interrupt this journey’.

As the crew set sail, there were many ignored warnings and delayed responses that led to a collision with an iceberg that ultimately sank the Titanic.  And though it was a shock to the world that the Titanic sank after sailing for only 4 days, it was even more of a shock that it only took 2 hours and 40 minutes for the ship to completely disappear after hitting an iceberg and that less than 1/3 of the ship’s passengers and crew survived.  What was later discovered was that many would not get into a lifeboat in fear their possessions would be taken or lost.  Others continued to dine at the all-you-can eat buffets. While others just lacked urgency – not believing that the ship could possibly sink.

There is a sobering truth that God’s Word warns us about… “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” (1 John 2:17)  It isn’t a matter of if this world will pass away, it is only a matter of when.  The question for us is, “How will we now respond as we live on a ‘sinking ship’?

Jesus warns us in Matthew 24:37-39  “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man (the end of this age and the beginning of the age to come). People were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage… and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came… This is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”

The people on the Titanic did not lack information. They knew the ship had hit an iceberg.  But what they lacked was truth, urgency, and humility.  If they had known that the Titanic was going to sink in less than 3 hours, I believe many would have responded differently and lives would have been saved.

My desire and prayer for us is that we walk humbly and gain wisdom now of the coming age and then live as “faithful and wise servants” in this age – living every day for the age to come and not “storing up for ourselves treasures on earth” that will be completely destroyed, but “storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven” that will not be destroyed. (Matt 6:19-20)   There are many lives to be saved and the time is urgent!

Lord Jesus, would you teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

May we live humbly with an age to come perspective.  I love you all!
