May We Not Lose Heart!
“Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, WE DO NOT LOSE HEART…
With the same spirit of faith, we believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in His presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore, WE DO NOT LOSE HEART.” (2 Cor 4:1,13-15)
We are in the final stretch of a 3-day corporate time of prayer and fasting. In the days leading up, we felt the significance of this fast. We now realize how important this time has been. These are moments in our lives when inquiring of the Lord (prayer) and responding to His voice can tangibly shift the trajectory of our lives and keep us from losing heart and mis-stepping with the Holy Spirit. It is in these times that our heart and mind are renewed and we experience a strengthening in our walk with Jesus and we get to better know the Lord’s heart and ways for us. And when we add fasting to prayer, it is like adding fuel to an already burning fire – as it intensifies our attentiveness to the Lord’s voice. His Word tells us that when we seek Him with all our heart, we will find Him! (Jer 29:13) In the midst of the storms around us, we must keep our eyes on Jesus and hear His voice. We can ONLY do this through the Holy Spirit working within us. There is no other way. “So we must fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor 4:18)
One of the things the Lord has impressed on us over this time of fasting is the need to increase the intensity and frequency of our prayers. Prayer positions our eyes on the Lord and sets our hearts into alignment through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives in us, but our body, soul, and spirit need to come into alignment with the Holy Spirit…with God’s will, and prayer facilitates this…and prayer and fasting together intensifies this!
Have you ever noticed how quickly we can go from calm to ‘freaking out’ over a situation, or in other cases we can be facing a situation that becomes so overwhelming that it begins to dominate our thoughts…often triggering fear, anxiety, loss of sleep, and even sickness. But if we can shift our attention off of our problems and onto the Lord by engaging in prayer and listening to His voice, God will intervene with a deep peace that circumvents our thoughts and He will put up a guard of peace over our hearts and our minds. This is His promise! Philippians 4:6-7 beautifully describes how this works. God didn’t create us to live on our own or go through storms on our own. He created us to live by His Spirit, which is why He reminds us many times to ‘pray without ceasing’, to ‘devote yourselves to prayer’, to ‘pray in the Spirit on all occasions’, to ‘always pray and not give up’. (1 Thess 5:17, Col 4:2, Eph 6:18, Luke 18:1)
These aren’t just good ideas, these are words of life! This is how we were created to live…so that we do not lose heart, but remain strengthened in His power. If we live according to our own nature and ways, it will not end well, but if we set our minds (through prayer) on what the Spirit desires, it will result in a physical and spiritual joy and peace-filled life! (Rom 8:5-7)
I am thankful to be part of a church leadership and body that is seeking the Lord with all their heart. We are in extraordinary times. May we pray in the Spirit on all occasions so that we remain spiritually minded. And may we not lose heart as we persevere through difficult times, always being ambassadors of Christ!
We love you!
