Living Out the Attitude of Christ

“In your relationships with one another, have the same attitude as Christ Jesus.” Phil 2:5

In Philippians 2, the apostle Paul doesn’t lighten up on the church.  He strongly declares that anyone who is to be united with Christ is to live their life just as Jesus lived on this earth, being one “who humbled himself and became obedient to death…”.   The apostle John states something similar in 1 John 2:5-6 “…This is how we know that we are in Christ: Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.”  This is no easy task and I see this as a progression of our minds being renewed and transformed by the Spirit as we look to Jesus by spending times in the Word, prayer, and worship, and allow our faith to be tested and strengthened in times of trials by developing a perseverance (strength in our faith) that develops our inner and outer character, that produces an eternal hope. (Rom 5:3-4)

As we finish out our three days of corporate fasting and prayer, I want to encourage you to read and meditate on what we call the Beatitudes – the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount – the first major teaching of Jesus (Matthew 5:3-10).  I believe these are key characteristics of Christ that we must have if we are to “walk as Jesus did”.  And the benefits are amazing!!  For you scholars, I realize that the word “beatitudes” comes from the Latin root word “beatus” and means happy or blessed.  But I prefer to look at this word as two words… “Be Attitudes”.  May these Be the Attitudes of Christ you live out!  😊

Before you dive into Matthew 5:3-10, let me clarify a few things and summarize the amazing blessings that come from living out these Attitudes.

“Poor in spirit” I see as those who are broken of their own ways, have a repentant heart and walk in obedience to the Spirit.

“Those who mourn” are those who take on the burdens of the Lord through prayer… “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”.

“The meek” are those who live humble lives with a complete submission and dependance on God.

“Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” are those wholeheartedly pursuing a life aligned with God’s will and passionately desiring the kingdom of heaven to be established on earth.

“The merciful” are those who forgive others their debts.  Ephesians 4:32 describes ‘merciful’ well!

“The pure in heart” are those who are single-minded on heavenly things and not earthly things. They are the ones who have a ‘good soil’ in the Matthew 13 Parable of the Sower.

“The peacemakers” are not those who just make ‘horizontal’ peace with others, but it is those who make ‘vertical’ peace between God and mankind by bringing the gospel of peace and committing themselves to the message of reconciliation to God as ambassadors of Christ.

“The persecuted” are those who suffer in ways Christ suffered because of righteousness – being led by the Spirit and so upholding the commands of Christ and doing the will of God with radical obedience. Watch last Sunday’s message on suffering… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC0qqeWh3no&t=1s

The promised blessings of living out these ‘Attitudes’ are:  Receiving the kingdom of heaven, being comforted by the Holy Spirit, inheriting the earth, being filled by the Spirit with an empowering grace to be holy, shown mercy by God, being able to see God, and being called sons of God.

Hope to see you tonight as we wrap up the corporate fast with prayer and worship at 7pm.
May you be blessed as you BE the ATTITUDES of Christ!
