A Selah Moment

For those we have not yet met, we are the Candler family, and we are so grateful to have recently joined the staff here at The Rock. From the very beginning, Dana, our kids, and I have felt deeply welcomed into this church family. We are thankful for the hunger for God’s presence that marks this community.

During our staff prayer time this week, the Lord seemed to draw our attention to a simple but profound word found throughout the Psalms: Selah.

The precise meaning of selah is difficult to pin down. It appears only in the Psalms (71x) and in the book of Habakkuk (3x), and there is no clear usage or explanation elsewhere in Scripture or ancient literature. Many believe it indicates a pause in the singing where the instruments continue, a moment to stop, reflect, and allow what has just been sung to settle deeply into the heart.

In other words, selah is an invitation to pause, consider, and behold.

Think of selah like a musical meditation moment where the words fall into the background and the music expands the emotional landscape, allowing us to respond personally to the LORD.

It is similar to a moment in a movie when the dialogue reaches its climax and then drops away, while the background music quietly carries the weight of what just happened, giving space for the audience to reflect before the next scene begins.

Life moves quickly. Our schedules fill, pressures mount, and our minds race. It becomes easy to move from one moment to the next without truly stopping to consider the Lord and His works. Yet the Psalms repeatedly invite us into these sacred pauses to reflect on who God is, what He has done, what He is saying, and how we are to respond.

Sometimes the most powerful moments with the Lord come not from speaking more, but from listening more.

As a staff, we sense the Lord inviting us into a kind of selah moment as a church, to slow down, reflect, and posture our hearts to hear Him more clearly.

This Sunday, Pastor Mike will share more about this invitation, and how we as a church family can posture our hearts to hear and respond to what the Lord may be inviting us into personally and corporately in this season.

Until then, perhaps take a few moments throughout this week to do what the Psalms encourage:

Pause.

Reflect.

Listen.

Selah.

“Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.  Selah” Psalm 24:6

Grace and peace,

Pastor Matt and your Rock Staff
