Humility & Trust
Psalm 27:1,3 CSB
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—whom should I dread? …
3 Though an army deploys against me, my heart will not be afraid;
though a war breaks out against me, I will still be confident.
Humility is one of the themes God has given our church for this year. And while there are many ways to define or understand humility, one of the ways I’ve been seeing it this week is “what I rely on”. When I rely on myself, that’s a form of pride. When I rely on God, that’s a form of humility.
What I like about this passage in Psalm 27 is that it models this form of humility. David says that even if an army started a war against him, his heart wouldn’t be afraid and he would be confident; which on the surface may sound prideful, but it’s actually humility. Why is he confident? Why isn’t he afraid? It’s because he has made the LORD his light and salvation, he’s made the LORD his stronghold. The confidence of David is not in himself, but fully in the LORD.
David’s humility kept him from relying on himself, his skills, his knowledge, or his connections. Instead, he relied on God. David put his Trust in God’s ability, not his own. And this connection between Trust and Humility is something I look forward to unpacking with you on Sunday. I hope to see you early for Breakfast (9am this Sunday), and am excited to discuss this chapter in groups and learn how we can have greater confidence by walking in more humility.
Father God, would you help us this week, as we meditate on your Word to shift our confidence from our ability to Your ability. Would You help us to rely on You and not our own strength. Enlighten our hearts to better understand the connection between humility and trust, and then walk in it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a humble week 😉
