Hearing God Unlocks Miracles

“Then the word of the LORD came to him [Elijah]:  “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide at the Wadi [brook] Cherith where it enters the Jordan.  You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.”
– 1 Kings 17:2-4 CSB

This passage of scripture is recorded right after the prophet Elijah declares that there will be no rain or dew for years, until he commands it. That’s a powerful proclamation with huge repercussions. Years without rain or dew have remarkable consequences on crops, livestock, and even personal hygiene.

But what I want to point our attention to is how God provided for Elijah amidst the greatest economic depression that generation had ever seen, and how Elijah positioned himself to receive the miracle.

Verse 2-3 says that “…the word of the LORD came to him: leave here, turn eastward, and hide at the Wadi Cherith [the brook]…

The Lord had commanded ravens to provide for him “there”. Elijah could have stayed where he was and prayed again and again for provision, but he wouldn’t have seen it. His miracle was waiting for him at the Wadi Cherith.

Without hearing God’s instructions (His voice), we will very likely miss His solutions. God doesn’t often do miracles in a vacuum. He seems to do them with our participation (Exodus 14 – Parting of the Red Sea; 2 Sam 5 – David defeats the Philistines 2x; 2 Kings 4 – Jars filled with oil; 2 Kings 5 – Naaman healed of leprosy; Luke 17:14 – Ten healed of leprosy , John 9:7- Blind man healed; Matthew 17:27 – Gold coin in the fish…to name just a few).

Father God, we ask that you would touch our hearts and give us greater discernment to hear your voice. And then, after you’ve done that, we also ask that you would give us grace by your Holy Spirit that would empower us to make time and space to hear your voice. We ask that you would help us to develop the self-discipline to put away distractions and competing voices so that we can hear you clearly. We pray that as we become people who hear You often and clearly, it would produce incredible miracles for our good and Your glory.

We look forward to seeing you tonight.

Have a blessed week,
Pastor Andrew and The Rock staff.
