Go and Make Disciples
For the last few weeks the Lord has been speaking to me about the importance of discipleship from Ephesians 4. I feel this is key to 2023 and where the Lord is leading The Rock.
This passage tells us that our resurrected and ascended Jesus has a plan to fill the earth with his glory. (Vs 7-10)
He does this through the five fold ministry. Apostles and prophets lay the foundation of Christ for the church to be built on. Evangelists are the heralds of the gospel that call the people to put their faith in Jesus. And pastors (shepherds) and teachers walk alongside the sheep and lead them until from this next generation of believers emerges with another five-fold expression. (Vs 11)
The point of the fivefold ministry is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry so that the body of Christ is strengthened and increases in the earth (Vs 12). What a privilege that you and I are called to increase the glory of Christ in our spheres of influence. We are to be equipped (to be provided what we are lacking) for the work of ministry (serving). This is the same word used by Jesus to describe his earthly ministry.
It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28 ESV
One of the main ways we are called to serve Jesus by building up His body is through disciple making. This is how Jesus served in his earthly life before He went to the cross. He poured himself into a few men for three years. This included opening the word with them, praying with them, having them watch him preach to and heal the people and then empowering them to preach and heal. Then He ascended on high and filled them with His Spirit to go and do what He did.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 ESV
We are going to talk about this more on Sunday, but I want to encourage you to start praying this prayer with me this week.
Lord, use me in 2023 to make disciples. Highlight the people that I am supposed to pour into, and then give me the power to do it. Give me eyes to see who You are drawing and ears to hear Your voice as I teach them to observe all that You have commanded. Equip me with what I need to increase your glory in the earth through raising up others.
I look forward to worshiping and praying with you tonight!
