Don’t Back Down — Pray, Listen, Obey!
“You will seek me and FIND me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently FIND me.” (Proverbs 8:17)
This coming week (Mon – Wed) we are calling a 3-day corporate time of fasting and prayer. I have asked our Rock staff to set this as a top priority and rearrange schedules to set time aside for this fast, and I want to invite our Rock family to do the same. We need to reprioritize in this time so we can clearly hear the voice of the Lord. I believe this corporate time of fasting and prayer is going to be critical to knowing our next steps and walking in the Lord’s plan. Remember when Joshua and the Israelites were crossing the Jordan to enter into the Promise Land and his words to the millions of Israelites were basically this: “Move out from your ‘comfortable’ positions and follow the Holy Spirit (the ark of the covenant of the Lord God), because we don’t know where we are going and we have never been this way before. …consecrate yourselves for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” (Josh 3:3-5) Joshua had given them 3 days before this to prepare. I am quite certain the Israelites prioritized their 3 days of preparation with prayer and likely fasting!
Another example in the Bible is when King Jehoshaphat had a vast army coming against them. He immediately resolved in his heart to seek the Lord and proclaimed a national fast so that all of Judah would seek the Lord. Similar to Joshua, Jehoshaphat prayed, “We have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” (2 Chron 20:12) Again, I am struck by the understanding of the importance of fasting and prayer these leaders had. They walked in a Godly humility and boldness that had nothing to do with human reasoning. Joshua/Israelites and Jehoshaphat/Judah had absolutely ZERO chance of survival in the world’s eyes, but they did not back down! They pressed into the Lord, prayed, listened, and then obeyed the voice of the Lord!
The Lord just recently impressed upon me to begin to pray that the Lord would cause confusion in the enemy camp. This reminded me of many times when the Lord did this for His people. When the Egyptians went after the Israelites, God threw the Egyptian army into confusion and then made the wheels come off the chariots before swallowing them up in the Red Sea.(Exod 14) When Gideon’s 300 men went to battle against 135,000 enemy swordsmen, God caused confusion in the enemy camp and they turned on each other with swords.(Judges 7) When Jehoshaphat fasted and prayed and heard the word of the Lord, he obeyed! He marched out his little army against the vast army of the enemy and the Lord caused confusion in the enemy camp and they destroyed each other. (2 Chron 20) It is time for the Church to rise up with Spiritual understanding and take territory! As we fast and pray and seek the face of the Lord (listen), He will reveal His heart and we will know His ways, plans, and strategies. Then we must obey. Let’s put an end to the prideful position of thinking we know what we are doing and asking the Lord to help us with our plans and strategies. Let us walk humbly as we fast and pray, listen, and then boldly obey His voice!
I’ll finish with this. I believe Ephesians 6:10-20 will be foundational words of wisdom for us over the next 12-18 months. “From now on, be strong IN THE LORD and in His mighty power! Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s deceitful schemes.” (Eph 6:10-11) This tells me that if I don’t have the FULL armor of God on, it is going to be difficult for me to STAND against the enemy’s tricky plans. Then after Apostle Paul talks about the armor, he says, “And pray in the Spirit on ALL occasions…and be alert and always keep on praying for all God’s people.” (Eph 6:18)
As we pray, may we have ears to hear and a willing heart to obey His voice no matter what!
I love you and am excited to fast and pray together.
