Do Not Pass Me By

Hi Rock Family,

I’ve been thinking about the story of the blind man who is healed by Jesus in Luke 18. The physical healing is remarkable, but what’s attracted my attention is the commotion the man makes in order to gain an audience with Jesus.

Luke 18:36-41 CSB

“Hearing a crowd passing by, he [the blind man] inquired what was happening.  “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by,” they told him.

So he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Then those in front told him to keep quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to him. When he came closer, He asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord,” he said, “I want to see.”

Like many of you, my heart is to cry out for Jesus, that He would call me near to Him. But recently I’ve felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to search my heart and find if I have the same desperation that this blind man had. Am I “crying out all the more”? Or am I content to sit and let the Lord pass by.

In the next chapter we see Jesus lament over Jerusalem because they “did not recognize the time when God visited you.” (Luke 19:44)  We’ve talked before about how we would drop everything if Jesus visited our home in the flesh; we’d cancel all our plans just to host Him and care for Him. But unfortunately it seems (at least for me) when I can’t see Him physically–and when I take my spiritual eyes off of Him, He quietly gets pushed to the background by other things competing for my time and attention.

As we prepare our hearts for Sunday, let’s ask God to supernaturally empower us to live a radical life for Jesus.

Father God, have mercy on us. Our love is real, but there are times when it is weak. Would you pour out grace to empower us to love you with more strength and more perseverance? Would you help us to push past the “norms” of culture and the fear of man, and embrace a radical lifestyle of being desperate for Jesus? Grant us grace, and stir us to live humbly and with an eternal mindset. In Jesus’ name; Amen.

I can’t wait to worship with you all this Sunday,
Pastor Andrew
