Devote Yourselves To Prayer

“These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer…” Acts 1:14 NASB 

 “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.” Col 4:2 NLT 

 “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 NLT

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been giving encouraging words to be a People of Action.  This is critical to living a godly life.  We have each been created by God, with a measure of His grace, to do good works.  This is our God-given purpose.  But it isn’t a given that we will live the life we were created for.  Faith and the power of the Spirit are key ingredients to fulfilling the good works God has for us.  And good works only happen in unity with the Spirit – knowing the will of God and then walking in it by the power of the Spirit.  And when we live by faith in our God-given purpose, Jesus is glorified in us!  My desire is that Christ is glorified by the way we live our lives!

This brings me to the title of this letter. “Devote Yourselves to Prayer”  I woke up Tuesday morning with the words “devote yourselves to prayer” and then began to write down some things I was hearing from the Lord.  We must devote ourselves to prayer if we are to live the supernatural life we were created for – as People of Action!  This requires a prayerful lifestyle with our eyes and ears constantly open to see and hear what Jesus desires to reveal to us by His Spirit. The devotion to prayer becomes the initiation of Faith in our lives.  It is this Faith-Seed that when planted in our hearts and cultivated well through an abiding obedience, will produce a fruit that will last!  May every day of our lives be spent on Jesus and not on things that are of no value in God’s kingdom.  And when Jesus returns and we each stand before Him, may we all hear the words, “Well done my good and faithful servant!” 

Lord, I pray that you, by your Spirit, would continue to teach us how to pray and give us the grace-strength to devote ourselves to prayer. Help us to keep our eyes constantly on you as the author and the perfecter of our faith.  May our prayers position our hearts for faith-seeds to be planted and cultivated, that we would receive an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade, but be kept in the vaults of heaven, shielded by God’s power! (1 Pet 1:4-5)

May the glory of God rise upon us as we devote ourselves to prayer, become filled with the knowledge of God’s will, and engage as people of action!  You are loved!
