Creating A Dwelling Place

“This is what the Lord says: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the Dwelling Place you will build for me? Where will my resting place be?”  Isaiah 66:1

“How lovely is your Dwelling Place, O Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.” Psalm 84:1

“ONE THING I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: That I may Dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His Dwelling.”  Psalm 27:4

If we are to boil down the God-given purpose of our lives to ONE THING, it is this:  To become a dwelling place for the Lord!

The Word of God tells us that David was a man after God’s own heart.  I am amazed at the spiritual insight David had in his time – before the revealing of the wisdom of God to the world – Jesus! (1 Cor 1:24)  The desire of David’s heart was to build a dwelling place for the Lord.  We see this in 1 Chron 28:2 “…I had it in my heart to build a dwelling (house) as a place of rest for the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it…”

There was a longing in David’s heart to create a place for the Lord to rest and dwell on the earth.  David would be blown away today to know what God has done for our generation as He has answered the longing of David’s heart and of His own heart, by sending Jesus to be our atonement and reconciliation, so that God’s Dwelling Place can now be IN US by the Holy Spirit!  And the beauty of this is that only together, through the oneness Jesus prayed for in John 17, will the believers…the Church…the Body…the Bride become the fullness of Christ’s body, with Jesus as the head!  (Eph 1:23 & 5:23)  And so the dwelling place for the Lord (the temple of God) is being built by us, with Jesus as the chief cornerstone, as we come together as one body in Christ for the purpose of becoming a Dwelling Place for God to live by the Spirit!  (Eph 2:19-22)

So I close this with this prayer out of Psalm 131 and Psalm 132:4 and ask you to agree with me to see this happen in our lives so that we, together, may continue to build the Dwelling Place for our God.

Lord, May we humble ourselves before you. May we not have pride, conceit, selfishness, jealousy, or any form of malice in our lives.  Help us, by your Spirit, not to worry about matters too great for us, or to gaze upon worldly things and take our eyes off of you Lord.  May we wait for you with a quieted soul and mind so that we may hear your voice and walk in your ways.  O my soul, put your hope, your trust, your faith, and your actions in the Lord both today and forevermore.  And we declare together the words of Psalm 132:4, “I will allow no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids, till I find a place for the Lord, a Dwelling Place for the Mighty One of Jacob!”
