Allowing Ourselves to be Led
“I will instruct you and show you the way to go; with my eye on you, I will give counsel. Do not be like a horse or mule, without understanding, that must be controlled with bit and bridle or else it will not come near you.”
-Psalm 32:8-9 CSB
There’s a park near my house where I see lots of people walk their dogs. Some dogs are incredibly well trained, and some are… not. It’s interesting to see the stark contrast between the two. One owner is constantly pulling and tugging at the harness on their obstinate animal, while the owner of the well trained dog needs only to speak a command and the dog immediately and obediently complies; even off leash.
That mental picture is what I think of when I read Psalm 32. The Lord is telling us, “I want to lead you, but I don’t want to have to pull and tug on you to get you to listen.”
I want to follow close to the Lord, and recognize his voice so that he doesn’t have to dig his spurs into my hide to get me going, or yank on the reins to turn my head away from distractions. I want his voice to guide me, for my spiritual ears and eyes to be open, and my heart to be yielded and obedient.
John 10:27 records Jesus saying, “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”
Let’s ask God to search our heart (Psalm 139:23-24) and expose any ways we are resisting God’s instruction, or where we are refusing to follow our shepherd.
Father God, we thank you for sending Jesus as the good shepherd. We acknowledge that you know what’s best, and you want the best for us. Forgive us where we’ve wandered from the pastures, still waters, or valleys you’ve led us to. We repent for being stubborn or unwilling to listen…especially when it doesn’t make sense to us. We ask that you search our hearts, and restore a sensitivity to your voice, so that we follow you. Amen
Have a blessed week and may the Lord instruct us and show us the way we should go.
