A People of Action

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”  James 1:22 NLT

On Sunday we spent a bit of time considering this verse from James, and others like it. We asked God to highlight the areas in our lives in which we’re growing in hearing without growing in action. We determined that we do not want to be hearers only; we don’t want to be like the foolish builder that heard the words but didn’t put them into action (Matt 7:24). 

As this week barrels ahead, I don’t want our “doing” to get pushed to the back-burner by full schedules and busy days. Rather, let’s remember what we prayed and promised on Sunday, and recommit to doing the good works that God planned for us (Eph 2:10). 

This Sunday, along with recognizing the men and women who have given their life while serving our country, we’ll take communion together and continue to look at the importance of action as we remember the day of Pentecost; the day when God sent his Holy Spirit to believers to empower them to do the work of the ministry. 

The empowering of the Holy Spirit is wonderful and amazing. How generous of God to give us both the desire and the power to do what pleases Him (Phil 2:13).

Father God, thank you for sending the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Thank you that He is at work in us changing us to become more like you. We recommit today to serve you, not just with lip-service, but with real actions. We ask for more of your power, more of your grace, and more of your love.
