Why Did God Tell You That?
As Jesus’ public, earthly ministry came to a close, the Apostle John records important conversations between Him and the disciples. In the middle of those conversations, we see Jesus not only telling the disciples about future things, but going deeper and telling them why He’s telling them about future things.
John 14:29 NLT “I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.”
John 15:11 NLT “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”
John 16:1 NLT “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith.”
John 16:4 NLT “Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.”
John 16:33 NLT “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
John 17:13 NLT “Now I am coming to you (Father). I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy.”
I think a word from the Lord is really powerful. Everyone should carry one (or several) prophetic words and promises for their life, families, career, etc. But it’s also important to recognize why God gives us a word.
Did God speak to you about your child having a strong relationship with Him? Maybe it’s so that, “you will be filled with my joy” when you run into difficult seasons?
Did God give you a word about ministry, but all you see are closed doors? Maybe it’s so that, “you will believe” even during delay?
Did God tell you a situation was going to work out, but you can’t imagine how? Maybe it’s so that, “you may have peace in me” when your situation is anything but peaceful?
Are you clinging to a word for healing despite the doctors giving you a bad report? Maybe He spoke that so, “that you won’t abandon your faith” during painful times?
How wonderful that God cares for us so deeply that He prepares us for difficult times with His words of encouragement, so that we can have peace, joy, and faith.
If you’re struggling to hold onto your peace, or joy, or faith, while waiting for God to fulfill a promise, remember that His word is the down-payment. He spoke to you about this situation beforehand to give you the strength to endure. So, whether He fulfills His promise in this age or in the age to come, we can rest confidently that our God is faithful.
This reminds me of Luke 22:29-32 (NLT)
“And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right to eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
In the above Scripture, Jesus gives a promise that isn’t fulfilled in this age, but is for the age to come. Remember, we are eternal beings, our life doesn’t end when we breathe our last breath. Jesus then tells them of something very difficult that’s coming, and His prophetic words to the disciples are meant to encourage and strengthen them.
I pray that you are encouraged this week by the Word of the Lord, whether it’s spoken, read, or impressed upon your heart. I pray that the Spirit of God comforts you through trials and empowers you in action. I expect that the intercession of Jesus for you will fortify your faith to continue to believe with all peace and joy through the power of His great grace. Amen.
Let’s keep our eyes (and ears) on Jesus.
With Love,
Andrew Nemeth & The Rock Staff
