The Debt of Love – Who is My Neighbor?

In light of our call on Sunday to continue to follow Jesus even when it is costly, I have been thinking about the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke chapter 10.

A teacher of the scriptures asked Jesus a really important question, a question we should all keep on the forefront of our minds, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”

When Jesus asks him to answer his own question with his understanding, the teacher says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Lk. 10:27) Jesus affirms this answer as the means to inherit eternal life, the age to come when God will remake heaven and earth and physically dwell with His people forever (Rev. 21:1-8).

But seeking to justify himself, the teacher asks, “But who is my neighbor?”.

Jesus answers with the parable of the Good Samaritan, and though there are many amazing points of revelation in this parable, the main point is your neighbor is the human being you unexpectedly find suffering in front of you that you didn’t plan to love.

This is one of the ways we follow Jesus in suffering, we enter into the suffering of others from a place of compassion knowing that Jesus has done the same for us.

If you are like me, here are the excuses you might hear in your mind, “This is not my problem.”, “I am already too busy to do anything about this.”, “I am sure someone else will help this person”. And the list goes on and on.

But I want to encourage you as you are faced with different situations similar to this parable, to ask yourself this question, “Jesus, is this a good work you are putting before me to be a conduit of your love and to be rewarded for in the age to come?”

As we ask this question in a thousand different scenarios, the Holy Spirit will confirm how we are to love those around us, how He will lead us in the process, and strengthen us in faithfulness. I pray that this call to love our neighbor as ourselves continues to grow in our congregation with great fruitfulness.
