Taking Hold of What is Truly Life
This past Sunday, Pastor Marcus taught a wonderful message about the present age and the coming age. I’ve since talked with several people whose hearts were stirred by this message. If you missed it, be sure to watch it here.
As I continue to train myself to live for the coming age, I’ve been thinking a lot about the following encouragement from the Apostle Paul (spiritual father and mentor) to Timothy (a young pastor).
17 ”Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share, 19 storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of what is truly life.”
1 Timothy 6:17-19 CSB
I was at the beach recently with my family, and while sipping an iced lemonade, enjoying amazing views, listening to the sound of the waves, I had a thought as I reclined on the beach chair, “Ah, this is the life,” And very quickly I heard the Holy Spirit speak to my heart, “No Andrew, this age is passing away, you haven’t yet taken hold of what is truly life,”
Now, this email isn’t about the sin of sunbathing, or the vanity of vacation. No, I actually think that God richly provides us with all things to enjoy. But the yachts that I saw, the beach front mansions, the fancy cars that were driving around–that’s not truly life. And sadly, if we are not careful, those things can actually cause us to ‘wander from the faith and pierce ourselves with many sorrows.’ (1 Tim 6:10)
If this life is as short as the Bible says (James 4:14, Psalm 103:15-16, Psalm 144:4) and eternity is as long as the Bible says, I would much rather be poor in this age, and rich in the age to come. Jesus says this in Matthew 16,
26 ”For what will it benefit someone if he gains the whole world yet loses his [eternal] life? Or what will anyone give in exchange for his life? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will reward each according to what he has done.”
Matthew 16:26-27 CSB
Instead of storing up treasures in this age (or “gaining the whole world”) I want to seek the eternal reward that Jesus will bring when He returns in glory.
Father God, would you help us by your mercy and grace to train ourselves in Godliness so that we will do what is good, that we will become rich in good works, and that we will be generous and willing to share. Help us to store up treasures for the coming age, and in doing so take hold of what is truly life. Lord, break off any deception that has tricked us into thinking that the cares and riches of this world are “true life” and give us a spirit of revelation to recognize the fake.
Let’s take hold of what’s truly life,
Pastor Andrew and your Rock Staff
